MSc Computational Mathematical Sciences

The MSc degree in Computational Mathematical Sciences is a fusion of mathematics, science and computing. Students in this program learn how to translate science and engineering problems into mathematical problems and solve them using computing algorithms. They develop strong problem-solving, analytical and programming skills as they work across diverse areas of science and mathematics. The program is designed to increase mathematical knowledge beyond the traditional level of a bachelor's degree in order to prepare students for careers requiring sophisticated Computational mathematical skills.

Program information

Duration of study:1 year
Minimum Total credits: 180

The degree is conferred on the grounds of prescribed coursework and mini-dissertation. A student has to take a number of courses that will make a total of at least 150 credits. The mini-dissertation carries 30 credits, where students have to choose a topic for their dissertation. The dissertation should be about 25–40 pages long, and using the LaTeX document preparation system is recommended. The cover page has to contain the name of the institute, the title of the dissertation, the name and the degree program of the student, the name and the university rank of the supervisor. Besides the detailed discussion of the topic, the dissertation should contain an introduction, a table of contents and a bibliography. Further formal requirements and recommended style files can be found in the dissertation format. The dissertation has to be defended according to the institution arrangement.

During the program Students will have one month opportunity to an external traineeship with the aim of being able to make substantial contributions in any environment where tools from mathematics are applied. As described in our mission, an external traineeship is therefore considered an essential part of the curriculum of the one-year Master’s program.

Admission Requirements

All students who have a BSc degree in Mathematics or Statistics may apply for admission to the Computational Mathematical Sciences MSc Program. Students who have a science, technical, informatics or economics BSc degree can apply only if they possess a minimum of 50% Mathematical modules for all modules taken.

Selection Process

In the selection procedure the applicant’s complete undergraduate with at least a GPA of 3.8 and, an overall average pass of at least B+ in Mathematics modules will be considered. Students must sit an oral entrance exam before a committee. The aim of the entrance exam is to assess the candidates’ knowledge, motivation and professional skills before the final admission decision.

Study Cost

There will be no study cost for successful applicants, full bursaries covering tuition, accommodation, meals and travel costs will be awarded to successful applicants.

Career Opportunities

In a recent study, mathematics, computer science, applied mathematics and statistics all ranked among the top 15 most valuable college majors in terms of salary and career prospects. The computational mathematical sciences program brings all these disciplines together.

An MSc. degree in computational mathematical sciences is one of the most versatile mathematics degrees, offering graduates many career options. This degree positions them for careers in computer technology, business, medical research, teaching and education, engineering and more. Some pursue graduate opportunities in areas such as biophysics, economics, medicine and statistics. Diverse areas of study such as cancer modeling, weather forecasting and financial modeling all involve computational mathematical sciences.
